Apply developing mathematical understandings and number sense to grapple with real problems involving estimation, patterns, measurement and logic.

Science/Cooking/Gardening

Nature literacy based exploration that includes gardening, cooking, natural art, and farmers market that will inspire students to connect to local habitats, explore biodiversity, and engage in citizen-science and STEM projects.
Research, create hypotheses, experiment, collect data, and analyze results within various scientific topics.
Participate in the farm to fork process: seasonal planting, farming, harvesting, preparing, and selling at RCS Farmers’ Market.
Cook and try new foods that will lay the groundwork for making healthier choices while integrating math and science.
Class includes a half hour of Open Play before the class to support social emotional development.

Social Studies

Learn about Medieval Times, Vikings, and explorers both seafaring and modern day.
Use props, costumes, and primary literature sources to immerse ourselves in the past.
Discuss political and environmental component that lead to what we refer to as the Medieval or Dark Ages.
Incorporate social studies, geography, language arts, and include a field trip to San Francisco Tall Ships.
Class includes one hour of Open Play before the class to support social and emotional development.

Thursday and Friday
Language Arts

Daily morning gathering includes community building through movement and games.
Read and comprehend literature including stories and drama.
Read and write poetry to discover language patterns and develop fluency and inflection.
Study figurative language, word relationships, and word meanings.
Engage grammar studies through games.
Small-group, teacher-led, mini-lessons support vocabulary development and spelling strategies.
Class includes a half hour of Open Play after the class to support social and emotional development.

Reading/Writing Workshop

Creative writing, illustrating, and publishing books by exploring the topics that interest them.
A blend of student choice and teacher directed activities including narrative, descriptive and persuasive writing, poetry, and student directed research.
Edit, revise, and practice spelling conventions and grammar through one on one teacher conferences tailored to student's needs.
Develop comprehension strategies by examining point of view, investigating characters, setting and tone through literature response journals and discussions.
Class includes one hour of Open Play before the class to support social and emotional development.

Art/Team Building/Workshop

Maker-centered class that invites students to apply critical thinking and innovation skills in the classroom to solve complex problems through design thinking and STEAM.
Introduce to a range of art mediums while participating in an exploration of world art.
Through team building activities, students work on communication and collaboration to increase a sense of empathy, community, and belonging.
Class includes one hour of Open Play before the class to support social emotional development: perspective taking, problem solving, and working together.
Cost: $1,215/semester

We accept Charter School vouchers as well as personal installment payments or a combination of the two.
