Who We Are

Roseville Community School (RCS) is an independent, nonprofit homeschool learning center and certified charter school vendor serving families throughout Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, and the greater Placer County area.

We offer full-time and part-time programs for children in kindergarten through 6th grade, built on a progressive education model that honors the whole child — academically, socially, and emotionally. Our mixed-age classrooms, hands-on curriculum, and strong parent community create an environment where children feel genuinely known, supported, and free to grow.

Founded in 1992 and inspired by the teachings of renowned early childhood educator Bev Bos, RCS has grown from a single trailer on a dirt patch into a vibrant campus with outdoor classrooms, natural play spaces, a school garden, and a community room that has been the heart of our school for decades.

Mission

At Roseville Community School, we cultivate creative, confident, critical thinkers through hands-on, child-centered progressive education. As a charter vendor serving homeschool families, we nurture curiosity, social and academic risk-taking, and each child's authentic voice in a supportive, collaborative community where learning comes alive.

Vision

We envision a dynamic learning community where children are celebrated for their individuality, encouraged to take meaningful risks, and motivated to become compassionate, imaginative, self-assured individuals — the dreamers, thinkers, and doers who will make meaningful contributions to the world.

Our Core Values & Progressive Education

An education at RCS is founded in the Progressive Education Model (PEM), as described by renowned educator Alfie Kohn. This transformative approach has eight core characteristics that shape every aspect of our program. Through hands-on learning strategies, multi-age classrooms, meaningful parent involvement, authentic community interactions, and cherished school traditions, we bring these values to life. Our ultimate goal is to support students in becoming confident, compassionate people ready to shape tomorrow.

Our Story

1992 — The Beginning

Inspired by educator Bev Bos and the families of Roseville Community Preschool, a small group of parents came together to create an elementary school rooted in child-centered learning. With one teacher, a shared vision, and a trailer on a dirt patch, Roseville Community School was born. From the very beginning, the focus was on honoring childhood, fostering curiosity, and creating a meaningful educational experience for children and families.

1992–2005 — Laying the Foundation

During its early years, RCS grew through the dedication of passionate teachers, involved families, and a strong belief in progressive education. The school established its identity as a multi-age learning community where hands-on experiences, creativity, and meaningful relationships guided learning. These formative years laid the foundation for the values and traditions that continue to shape the school today.

2005 — Becoming a Nonprofit & Growing Community

Roseville Community School formally incorporated as a nonprofit organization, strengthening its ability to serve families while preserving its mission and educational philosophy. Guided by a dedicated Board of Directors, passionate teachers, and committed parent volunteers, RCS continued to grow as a thriving community rooted in collaboration, connection, and progressive education.

2019–2020 — A Time of Transition

Like many schools across the country, RCS faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Operations were temporarily paused, creating uncertainty about the future. Yet the strength of the community and belief in the school's mission remained.

2021 — Rebuilding & Reimagining

In 2021, Roseville Community School reopened with a renewed vision as a learning center serving homeschooling families. By partnering with charter schools and becoming an approved vendor, RCS was able to provide meaningful educational opportunities for families seeking flexibility, connection, and a progressive learning environment. This new chapter allowed the school to rebuild its foundation while remaining true to its core values.

Today — Growing Forward

What began as a trailer on a dirt patch has become a vibrant learning campus filled with towering trees, a zipline, rope swings, gardens, treehouses, and imaginative play spaces. More importantly, it has become a thriving community where children are known, families are connected, and learning is driven by curiosity, creativity, and wonder.

More than thirty years after its founding, Roseville Community School continues to evolve while staying true to the vision that started it all: creating a place where children can learn, grow, and belong.

And we're still growing—we'd love for your family to be part of our story.

Our Legacy

Our Inspiration: Bev Bos

Roseville Community School traces its roots to the vision of renowned early childhood educator Bev Bos, founder of Roseville Community Preschool. A passionate advocate for play-based, child-centered education, Bev believed that children learn best through exploration, creativity, meaningful relationships, and hands-on experiences.

In 1992, families from Roseville Community Preschool were inspired by Bev's philosophy and wanted to continue that same approach beyond the preschool years. Together, they founded Roseville Community School to provide an elementary program that honored childhood, trusted children as capable learners, and nurtured curiosity, community, and a lifelong love of learning.

Today, her influence continues to guide both schools, creating a unique educational pathway where children can grow in an environment rooted in respect, wonder, and authentic learning.
