Learning Environment

Our challenge is to build on the child's innate desire to learn. To do this we must provide a climate where children are encouraged to make full use of their senses, feelings and minds. We strive to:

  • Maintain a small class size. Currently, the younger classes have a maximum teacher-student ratio of 1:12; the upper grades of 1:15.
  • Support a multi-age classroom. Personal capabilities, rather than age, determine curriculum groups.
  • Nurture self-esteem and awareness in students. Goals, work portfolios, and conferences include the child.
  • Foster a sense of community in learning. Small group projects, cooperative games, problem-solving activities, and interpersonal communications are featured every day.
  • Create an active, integrated curriculum that builds on a student's interests.
  • Use the outdoors in instruction and play via gardens, natural areas, and field trips.
